With All Due Respect Mr. President, Your Tweet About the London Attacks Was Inappropriate and Insensitive

On Sunday morning, moments after news broke of a terrorist attack in London that left seven people dead and dozens more injured, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to share his thoughts.

“We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!” the president tweeted.

The tweet was quickly criticized as being insensitive and inappropriate in the wake of a tragedy. London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who is Muslim, responded to Trump’s tweet, saying, “I’m not going to rise to the president’s tweets. I’ve been doing far more important things over the last 24 hours.”

Many others also spoke out against the president, including some who normally support him.

“Can we all agree, regardless of politics, that this is a disgusting tweet by the President of the United States?” tweeted conservative commentator Ben Shapiro.

“This is so insensitive. I can’t believe our President would say something like this,” wrote one Twitter user.

“This is a new low, even for you,” another user said to the president.

Some came to Trump’s defense, arguing that his tweet was not out of line given the circumstances.

“The President is right. We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need to do whatever it takes to keep our country safe,” one Twitter user wrote.

“I think the President is just expressing what a lot of us are feeling. We’re sick and tired of being attacked,” another user said.

At a time when the world is coming together to condemn terrorism, it is important for leaders to be mindful of their words and actions. In the aftermath of a tragedy, people are looking to their leaders for guidance and reassurance.

President Trump’s tweet did neither of those things. Instead, it further divided an already divided nation.

  1. It is absolutely sickening that our President would say something so insensitive in the wake of a tragedy. Terrorism is a global problem and we need to be united in our efforts to combat it, not divided. Trump’s tweet does nothing but sow division and hatred. He is not fit to be our President.
