Sleep is an essential part of our lives, without it we can find ourselves struggling with our physical and mental health. Sleep is a time for our bodies to rest and restore, allowing us to cope with the stresses of everyday life and improve our overall health. Despite this, many of us are still struggling to get the recommended amount of sleep we need each night.

So, why do we need more sleep? Firstly, sleep is essential for our body’s immune system to function correctly. During sleep, our body produces cytokines which are small proteins that help to fight infection and inflammation. This is why we may be more prone to catching colds or feeling run down if we’re not getting enough sleep.

In addition, if we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies are unable to repair and heal itself. During sleep, our bodies repair our cells, allowing us to remain healthy and strong. If we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies don’t have the time to produce enough hormones which can lead to a weakened immune system.

Our mental health is also very dependent on how much sleep we get each night. Our moods can be greatly affected by a lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation can lead to increased irritability, depression, anxiety and difficulty in concentrating. As well as this, sleep deprivation has been linked to decreased creativity and impaired decision making.

Finally, one of the most important reasons we need more sleep is because it can help to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases. Studies have shown that people who don’t get enough sleep are at a much higher risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, stroke and obesity. This is because sleep deprivation leads to a disruption in our body’s normal processes and can cause a detrimental impact on our overall health.

In conclusion, getting enough sleep is essential for our health and wellbeing. It’s important to make sure we get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep every night in order to keep our bodies and minds in the best condition possible. Without enough sleep our bodies will not be able to repair and heal itself, leading to a weakened immune system and an increased risk of developing chronic diseases. Therefore, it’s vital that we make it a priority to get the right amount of sleep in order to stay healthy.
