You may have heard that it’s important to drink eight cups of water a day. But what happens if you drink too much water?
Drinking too much water can lead to water intoxication, also called hyponatremia. This is a condition in which the body’s electrolytes are diluted to the point where they can no longer function properly.
Symptoms of water intoxication include headache, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and seizures. In severe cases, it can lead to coma or death.
Water intoxication is most commonly seen in athletes who drink large amounts of water during or after exercise. It can also occur in people who drink too much water during a hot day, or in infants who are fed too much water.
If you think you or someone you know has water intoxication, it’s important to seek medical help immediately. Treatment involves replacing the body’s electrolytes and fluids. In severe cases, a person may need to be hospitalized.
So, how much water is too much? It depends on a variety of factors, including how much you weigh, how much you sweat, and how active you are.
If you’re healthy and active, you can probably handle a few extra cups of water a day. But if you’re not used to drinking a lot of water, it’s best to stick to the eight-cup guideline.
Remember, too, that you can get fluid from other sources besides water, such as fruits, vegetables, and soups. So if you’re not a big fan of water, there’s no need to force yourself to drink it. Just make sure you’re getting enough fluid from other sources.
