It was early morning on Thanksgiving day when 27 year old Tracy Westwood was brought into the hospital by her family. Tracy had been in a coma for the past 23 years, ever since she was involved in a horrific car accident at the age of 4. Her family had never given up hope that she would one day wake up, and this morning, it seemed, their prayers had been answered.
Tracy’s story is one of hope and determination in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. She is a reminder to us all that miracles can happen, even when all hope seems lost.
Tracy’s accident happened on a sunny day in July, 1994. She was riding in the backseat of her family’s car when another driver ran a red light and collided with them, sending their car spinning off the road. Tracy was ejected from the car and suffered severe head trauma. She was rushed to the hospital and placed in a medically induced coma in an effort to save her life.
For the next 23 years, Tracy remained in that coma, her family never giving up hope that she would one day wake up. They visited her every day, talking to her and telling her about all that was happening in their lives in the hopes that she could hear them.
And then, on Thanksgiving morning, Tracy’s mother went into her room to find her daughter awake and alert, asking for some apple juice.
It is still unclear what exactly caused Tracy to wake up from her 23-year coma. Doctors believe it may have been a combination of things, including the love and support of her family, which gave her the strength to fight.
Today, Tracy is doing physical therapy and working hard to catch up on all the things she’s missed in the past 23 years. She is an incredible example of the human spirit’s ability to triumph over adversity.
