We all know the feeling all too well – you’re lying in bed, stomach grumbling, and all you can think about is food. After a long day at work or taking care of the kids, the last thing you want to do is go to bed on an empty stomach. But eating before bed can have some pretty serious consequences. Here are five foods you should never eat before bed.
1. Spicy Foods
When you eat spicy foods, your body temperature rises and your metabolism speeds up. This can lead to trouble falling asleep and staying asleep throughout the night. In addition, spicy foods can cause heartburn and indigestion, which can keep you awake and uncomfortable.
2. Caffeinated Foods and Drinks
This one is pretty obvious – caffeine is a stimulant, so it’s going to keep you awake. But did you know that caffeine can stay in your system for up to six hours? So if you have a cup of coffee at 4pm, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to fall asleep until at least 10pm.
3. Fatty Foods
Fatty foods are hard to digest and can cause heartburn, indigestion, and even nausea. Eating a heavy, fatty meal right before bed is a recipe for a sleepless night.
4. Sugary Foods
Sugar is a natural energizer, so it’s no surprise that eating sugary foods before bed can keep you awake. But that’s not the only reason to avoid sugar before bed. Sugar can also cause an increase in anxiety and restlessness, making it even harder to fall asleep.
Alcohol may make you feel drowsy, but it actually disrupts your sleep cycle. You may fall asleep quickly after drinking, but you’ll likely wake up a few hours later and have trouble falling back asleep. Alcohol can also cause snoring and make you more likely to wake up during the night to use the bathroom.
