When it comes to love and fashion, some couples just click. For nearly 10 years, Matt Plunkett and his wife, Emily, have been dressing alike — every single day.
The idea started as a joke. “We were out one night and Emily made a comment about how cute it would be if we dressed alike every day,” Plunkett told TODAY Style. “I said, ‘Sure, let’s do it.’ And we just never stopped.”
Now, the pair have amassed a wardrobe of coordinating looks, from jeans and T-shirts to wedding attire. While their ensembles are often similar, they don’t always match perfectly.
“People always ask if we plan our outfits ahead of time, but we don’t,” Plunkett said. “We just kind of go with the flow.”
The couple, who live in Los Angeles, said they often get compliments on their synchronized style.
“People will say things like, ‘Oh, my gosh, you guys are so cute! Do you do this every day?’” Plunkett said. “It definitely turns heads.”
While their friends and family are used to seeing them in coordinating outfits, Plunkett said strangers sometimes do a double take.
“We were in New York City once and we got separated in a crowd,” he recalled. “I was looking for her and I saw this woman walking toward me in the same outfit as Emily. I was like, ‘That’s my wife!’”
The couple has even been featured on television shows and in magazines, including an episode of TLC’s “My Strange Addiction.”
“It was surreal,” Plunkett said of the experience. “But it was also great to be able to share our story with the world.”
While their matching style might not be for everyone, the Plunketts said they enjoy expressing their love for each other through fashion.
“I think it’s a really fun way to show that you’re in a relationship,” Emily Plunkett said. “I don’t think we’ll ever stop.”
