When trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight, it is important to be aware of the foods you are eating and when you are eating them. Just as there are certain foods you should eat before bed to promote better sleep, there are also foods you should avoid before bed as they can disrupt sleep or contribute to weight gain. The following is a list of the five worst foods to eat before bed.

1. Spicy Foods

Eating spicy foods before bed can cause indigestion and heartburn, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. In addition, spicy foods can exacerbate existing gastrointestinal issues like acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome. If you enjoy spicy food and want to eat it before bed, be sure to do so at least three hours before sleep to give your body time to digest.

2. Caffeinated Beverages

While caffeine is a naturally-occurring stimulant, it should be avoided before bed as it can cause difficulty falling asleep. Caffeine can also cause restless sleep and frequent awakenings throughout the night. If you enjoy caffeine, be sure to consume it earlier in the day and limit yourself to no more than 200 milligrams (about two cups of coffee) to avoid disrupting your sleep.

3. Alcohol

While drinking alcohol before bed may help you fall asleep, it actually decreases the quality of sleep. Alcohol consumption before bed can cause increased awakenings, lighter sleep, and decreased REM sleep. REM sleep is the deepest stage of sleep and is important for memory and learning. If you choose to drink before bed, do so in moderation and at least two hours before sleep to allow your body time to metabolize the alcohol.

4. Fried Foods

Fried foods are high in fat and calories, and eating them before bed can cause weight gain. In addition, fried foods can cause indigestion and heartburn, making it difficult to sleep. If you want to eat fried foods, do so in moderation and at least three hours before sleep to give your body time to digest.

5. Sugary Foods

Sugary foods can cause blood sugar spikes and crashes, leading to difficulty falling asleep and restless sleep. In addition, sugary foods can contribute to weight gain. If you want to eat sugary foods before bed, do so in moderation and balance them with protein-rich foods to help stabilize blood sugar levels.
