A new study has found that sleeping for more than eight hours a night may actually be bad for your health. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Warwick in the UK, found that people who sleep for more than eight hours a night are more likely to die prematurely than those who sleep for less.

The study followed more than 44,000 people over a period of 13 years, and found that those who slept for more than eight hours a night were 30% more likely to die during the course of the study than those who slept for less than eight hours. The increased risk of death was even higher for those who slept for more than nine hours a night, with these individuals being 40% more likely to die prematurely than those who slept for less than eight hours.

The increased risk of death associated with sleeping for more than eight hours a night was seen in both men and women, and was independent of other factors such as age, smoking status, and body mass index.

So why might sleeping for more than eight hours a night be bad for your health? The researchers say that it is not entirely clear, but one possibility is that it could be a marker for an underlying health condition. For example, people who sleep for long periods of time might be more likely to have sleep apnoea, which is a condition that can lead to high blood pressure and other health problems.

Whatever the reason, the findings of this study are sure to cause some concern for those of us who like to get a good night’s sleep. So if you find yourself sleeping for more than eight hours a night, it might be worth seeing your doctor to check for any underlying health conditions.
