Isabella Charlotte: The world’s oldest flamingo

Isabella Charlotte, or “Izzy” as she is known to her friends, is a Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) who resides in the Adelaide Zoo in South Australia. At approximately 83 years old, she is thought to be the world’s oldest flamingo.

Izzy was born in the wild, in what is now southern Chile, in 1937. She was captured by hunters and sold to a circus in Argentina, where she performed tricks for audiences. In 1945, she was bought by the Adelaide Zoo and has lived there ever since.

Izzy is a popular resident of the zoo and is well-known for her striking pink plumage and long neck. She is often seen preening herself or wading in her enclosure’s pool.

Despite her age, Izzy is still in good health and shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, she is often seen chasing after younger flamingos in her enclosure!

Izzy is a true ambassador for her species and has helped to raise awareness of the plight of flamingos in the wild. As the world’s oldest flamingo, she is a much-loved member of the Adelaide Zoo community and is sure to be cherished for many years to come.
