I’m not going to lie, when I first heard about the “no poo” method of not washing your hair for weeks, even months, on end, I was pretty skeptical. I mean, come on, who doesn’t love a good shampoo? And how could not washing your hair possibly be good for it?
But out of curiosity, and a desire to save some time and money ( shampoo and conditioner can be pricey!), I decided to give it a shot. For two months, I washed my hair with nothing but water, and here’s what happened.
Immediately after cutting out shampoo, I noticed that my hair was a lot oilier than usual. I was used to washing my hair every day, so going more than 24 hours without washing it was definitely a change. But I stuck with it, and after a few days, my hair started to adjust. The oiliness wasn’t as bad, and my hair actually started to look and feel kind of…clean?
After a week or so, I started to notice that my hair was looking a lot less dry and damaged. Shampoo can strip your hair of its natural oils, which can lead to dryness, frizz, and breakage. But without shampoo, my hair was able to retain its natural moisture, and it looked and felt so much healthier.
My scalp also started to feel better. Without the harsh chemicals in shampoo, my scalp wasn’t nearly as dry or itchy as it normally was. And my hair didn’t seem to get as greasy, even though I was skipping washes.
The biggest change I noticed, though, was in my hair color. I have fairly light hair, and without shampoo, my hair started to take on a more golden, sun-kissed hue. It was subtle, but definitely noticeable, and I loved it!
All in all, I’m really glad I tried the no poo method. My hair has never looked or felt better, and I love not having to waste time and money on shampoo and conditioner. If you’re thinking about giving it a try, I say go for it!
