I Tried the ‘Dry January’ Challenge and Here’s What Happened

I’ve always been a social drinker. I never really drank in college, but since moving to New York City after graduation, going out for drinks has become a weekly (if not daily) occurrence. Whether it’s happy hour with co-workers, meeting up with friends for dinner and drinks, or going out to bars on the weekends, drinking has become a big part of my social life. So when I heard about the “Dry January” challenge – giving up alcohol for the month of January – I was intrigued. Could I really go a month without drinking?

I decided to give it a try.

For the first week, things were actually pretty easy. I didn’t really miss drinking and I had no trouble saying “no” when friends asked me if I wanted a drink. I was feeling really good – I had more energy, my skin was clearing up, and I was saving money.

But by the second week, I was starting to get antsy. I was going out to dinner and happy hour with friends, but while they sipped on wine and cocktails, I was stuck drinking water or soda. I didn’t mind at first, but after a while, it started to feel a bit lonely.

I made it through two more weeks, but by the fourth week, I was ready to throw in the towel. I was out to dinner with friends and the temptation was just too strong. I ordered a glass of wine and drank it way too fast. I felt guilty afterwards, but it was worth it.

Overall, I’m glad I tried the Dry January challenge. It was a good way to reset my body after all the holiday partying. But I don’t think I could do it again – at least not anytime soon. I’ve realized that I really do enjoy drinking and it’s a big part of my social life. So for now, I’ll just stick to drinking in moderation.
