I Taught Myself to Read in Six Months, and It Was the Best Decision I Ever Made

Most people learn to read at a young age in school, but for some, this isn’t the case. I am one of those people. I didn’t learn to read until I was 23 years old.

It all started when I was in college. I was taking a required English class, and we had to read a lot of books. I could never seem to get through them. I would start reading, and then get so lost and confused that I would just give up. My grades in the class were suffering because of it.

I knew I needed to do something, so I decided to teach myself how to read. I got a list of the most common words in English and started memorizing them. I also started reading simple children’s books. It was slow going at first, but I kept at it.

Six months later, I could finally read proficiently. It was the best decision I ever made. Not only did my grades improve, but I also felt a sense of accomplishment. I had overcome a lifelong struggle.

If you’re someone who struggles with reading, I urge you to try teaching yourself. It’s not as difficult as you think, and it will change your life for the better.
