I’m sure that many of us have, at one point or another, wished we could train our dogs to do some of the things that we humans take for granted – like using the toilet. Well, as it turns out, it is possible to train your dog to use the toilet – and it’s not as difficult as you might think!
I taught my dog to use the toilet about a year ago, and it has been a total game-changer. Not only does he save me the hassle of having to walk him every time he needs to go, but he also flushes the toilet afterwards!
The process is actually pretty simple. I started by taking my dog into the bathroom with me whenever I needed to go. I would let him watch me as I did my business, and then I would flush the toilet afterwards. I did this for a few weeks, until he was comfortable with the process.
Then, I started putting a small amount of food in the toilet bowl before I flushed it. This way, he would associate the act of flushing with something positive (getting a treat).
Once he was consistently flushing the toilet after I used it, I started gradually reducing the amount of food I gave him as a reward. Now, he does it completely on his own – and he loves it!
If your dog is struggling to learn how to use the toilet, don’t worry – just keep at it and be patient. They’ll get the hang of it eventually!
