How to Stop Texting and Focus on Real Life

Texting can be an incredibly useful way to communicate with friends, family, and coworkers. But it can also be a major distraction from the real-world activities that truly matter. So how can you put down your phone and start focusing on the things that really matter in life?

First, set a limit for yourself. Decide how many texts you’ll allow yourself to send and receive each day, and stick to it. Put away your phone when you don’t need it. If you’re at work or school, leave your phone in your pocket or purse while you’re in class or at your desk. That way, you won’t be tempted to check it every few minutes.

Second, be aware of when you’re using your phone the most. Is it during meals, when you’re walking to class, or when you’re trying to wind down at night? Identify those times and make an effort to put away your phone and engage in something else.

Third, find alternatives to texting. Instead of texting your friends, try to call them, meet up with them in person, or even write them a letter. You’ll be able to actually have a real conversation, and it’s much more meaningful than exchanging a few texts.

Finally, find activities to fill the time you used to spend texting. Read a book, take a walk, or find a new hobby. Doing something that you enjoy and that is meaningful to you will help take your mind off of constantly checking your phone.
