Lava lamps are one of the most popular home décor items of the last few decades. They are unique, fun, and add a touch of retro style to any room. But did you know that you can make your own lava lamp at home?

Here’s how:

You will need:

A clear glass jar with a wide mouth

A small light bulb

A cork

A piece of wire

A funnel

Water

Vegetable oil

Food coloring

First, take your glass jar and fill it about ¾ of the way full with water. Then, use the funnel to add vegetable oil to the water until the jar is almost full. The proportions of water to oil don’t have to be exact, but you want more oil than water so that the lava rises to the top of the jar when it’s heated.

Next, add a few drops of food coloring to the jar. You can use any color you like, but we find that red or yellow works best.

Now it’s time to prepare the lava. Take the cork and make a small hole in the center with the wire. This hole should be just big enough for the light bulb to fit through snugly.

Once the hole is made, screw the light bulb into the cork. Be careful not to break the bulb!

Now, carefully lower the cork with the light bulb into the jar. The light bulb should be all the way at the bottom of the jar, touching the water.

Turn on the light bulb and watch as the lava rises to the top of the jar! The heat from the light bulb will cause the lava to rise and fall, just like a real lava lamp.

You can experiment with different colors and proportions of oil and water to get different effects. Have fun and enjoy your homemade lava lamp!
