Fingerprints are formed in the womb during the fetal development stage. As the fetus grows and develops, the ridges found on the fingers and toes emerge. Whorls are characterised by a circular pattern with ridges entering from one side and exiting the opposite side. Finally, arches are characterised by ridges that enter from one side and exit the other, but lack a loop or circular pattern.

For example, a person with predominantly loop fingerprints is said to be open-minded, while a person with whorl patterns is said to be more analytical.
