In an interview with the BBC, the Dalai Lama said that Donald Trump is “a bit confused.” The Tibetan spiritual leader also said that he hopes Trump will “rethink” his policies on immigration and climate change.
The Dalai Lama has been critical of Trump in the past, but this is the first time he has directly addressed the US president by name.
In the interview, the Dalai Lama was asked about Trump’s policies on immigration and climate change.
On immigration, the Dalai Lama said that Trump’s policies are “based on wrong view.”
“I think [Trump] should take a more holistic approach,” the Dalai Lama said. “I think he should rethink.”
The Dalai Lama also said that Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement was “wrong.”
“I think everyone has a responsibility to protect our environment,” the Dalai Lama said.
The Tibetan spiritual leader also addressed Trump’s recent meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying that he thinks Trump is “sincere” in his efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.
“I think [Trump] is sincere. I think he really wants to do something,” the Dalai Lama said.
But the Dalai Lama cautioned that Trump should be “cautious” in his dealings with Kim Jong Un, saying that the North Korean leader is “not fully developed.”
“I think [Trump] should take care, should be careful,” the Dalai Lama said.
