BREAKING: Trump supporters storm US Capitol!

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on January 6, 2021, a large group of President Donald Trump’s supporters breached the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. in an attempt to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.

The group, which had been protesting outside the Capitol for most of the day, overwhelmed police and broke through security barriers. They then made their way into the building, with some clashing with officers along the way.

Once inside, the group roamed through the halls of the Capitol, with some entering the Senate chamber and House of Representatives chamber. Some Trump supporters also made it onto the Senate dais and onto the House floor.

The chaotic scene prompted a lockdown of the Capitol complex, and Vice President Mike Pence and members of Congress were evacuated to secure locations.

The breach of the Capitol came after Trump spoke at a nearby rally, reiterating his false claims that the election had been stolen from him and encouraging his supporters to march to the Capitol to demand that Congress overturn the election results.

As the situation at the Capitol unfolded, social media platforms began restricting Trump’s account and removing some of his posts, citing the risk of further violence.

The certification of Biden’s victory was ultimately halted for several hours as a result of the breach, but Congress resumed the process later in the evening and confirmed Biden’s win early on Thursday morning.

The violence at the Capitol was a shocking and unprecedented attack on American democracy, and it is still unclear what the long-term ramifications will be.
