7 things you should never say to an introvert

1. You’re so quiet!

This is probably the most common thing people say to introverts, and it can be pretty frustrating. It’s not that we’re necessarily shy or anti-social, we just don’t feel the need to fill every silence with meaningless chatter. We’re perfectly content enjoying our own company, thank you very much.

2. Why are you so serious?

Contrary to popular belief, introverts can be quite social and even quite funny. But we also have a tendency to be more serious than our extroverted counterparts. This is because we tend to internalize things more, and we’re often more thoughtful and introspective.

3. You need to loosen up!

Again, introverts can be just as fun-loving and outgoing as anyone else, we just don’t feel the need to do it all the time. We like to take our time and savor experiences, rather than rushing through them. So please, don’t tell us to “loosen up” just because we’re not party animals 24/7.

4. You’re too sensitive.

Introverts are often highly sensitive people, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We’re just more in tune with our emotions and the emotions of others. This can be both a blessing and a curse, but it’s just how we are.

5. You’re overthinking everything.

It’s true that introverts tend to overthink things, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We just like to analyze and process information more deeply than others. This can lead to us being more thoughtful and introspective, which is definitely not a bad thing.

6. You need to come out of your shell.

This is something that introverts hear all too often, and it’s really not helpful. We’re perfectly happy in our “shells,” thank you very much. We don’t need to force ourselves to be someone we’re not just to please others.

7. You’re so boring.

This is perhaps the most hurtful thing that anyone can say to an introvert. Just because we don’t live our lives at 100 miles per hour doesn’t mean we’re boring. We just enjoy a more subdued lifestyle, and that’s perfectly fine.
