7 signs that you’re not drinking enough water


Water is essential for human life. It makes up about 60% of our body weight and is involved in every bodily function, from regulating our temperature to transporting nutrients and oxygen to cells.

But despite its importance, many of us don’t drink enough water. In fact, according to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 3 out of 4 Americans don’t drink the recommended 8 cups (64 oz) of water per day.

If you’re not sure if you’re drinking enough water, look out for these 7 signs:

1. You’re Thirsty

This one seems like a no-brainer, but it’s worth mentioning because thirst is often the first sign that you’re dehydrated.

If you’re feeling thirsty, drink a glass of water and see if that satisfies your thirst. If it does, great! You’re on your way to staying hydrated.

If, however, you find yourself thirsty even after drinking a glass of water, it’s a good idea to drink more water throughout the day.

2. You Have Dark-Colored Urine

When you’re properly hydrated, your urine should be light yellow or clear. If it’s dark yellow or amber, it’s a sign that you’re not drinking enough water.

Dark urine is a result of your kidneys holding on to water in an effort to compensate for the lack of fluids in your body.

3. You Have Dry Skin

Dry skin is another common sign of dehydration. When your body doesn’t have enough water, it takes water from other places, like your skin.

This can lead to dry, flaky skin that is more prone to wrinkles and other skin problems.

4. You Feel Tired or Sluggish

Dehydration can also lead to fatigue and lethargy. This is because water is involved in many of the body’s functions, including energy production.

If you’re feeling tired or sluggish, drink a glass of water and see if that gives you a boost of energy.

5. You Have a Headache

Headaches are another common symptom of dehydration. When you don’t have enough water, your blood vessels constrict, which can lead to a headache.
