It’s not always easy to tell if you’re in an unhealthy relationship. Here are five signs to watch out for:
1. You’re always walking on eggshells.
If you’re constantly worried about what you say or do in case it sets your partner off, that’s a sign that something’s not right. A healthy relationship should be built on trust and mutual respect, not fear.
2. You’re not allowed to have any close friends.
Jealousy is normal to a certain extent, but if your partner doesn’t want you to have any close friends, that’s a red flag. They might be afraid of losing you or of being compared to someone else. Either way, it’s not healthy.
3. You’re always apologizing.
Do you find yourself apologizing for things that you didn’t even do? If so, it’s likely that your partner is gaslighting you. Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse where the abuser tries to make their victim doubt their own reality. It’s a very manipulative tactic and can be extremely damaging to the victim’s mental health.
4. You’re never really sure what’s going to set them off.
Do you find yourself walking on eggshells, as mentioned before, because you never really know what’s going to set your partner off? This is another sign of an unhealthy relationship. Your partner should be able to communicate with you about what they’re feeling and what they need from you. If they can’t do that, it’s a problem.
5. You’re always feeling insecure.
Insecurity is another common symptom of an unhealthy relationship. If you’re always feeling like you’re not good enough or like your partner is going to leave you, that’s a sign that something’s not right. A healthy relationship should make you feel secure and loved, not anxious and paranoid.
